Bangkok, Sept 26 (V7N) – A massive sinkhole swallowed part of a busy road in central Bangkok near Vajira Hospital and a police station on Wednesday, causing major disruptions but no casualties, officials confirmed.
The sinkhole, which measured about 164 feet deep and nearly 9,700 square feet in area, engulfed a car, electrical poles, and sections of the road, prompting authorities to evacuate nearby areas. “The hospital has no problems, but we are worried about the police station. That’s still dangerous, and the public has been evacuated,” Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters that no deaths or injuries were reported. However, Vajira Hospital announced it would temporarily suspend new admissions until the situation was stabilized.
Investigators believe the collapse was triggered by a water leak from a burst pipe in an underground tunnel under construction for Bangkok’s subway expansion. “Dirt from an underground train construction was sliding in. Luckily, there are no deaths or injuries,” Charnvirakul said.
Videos shared on social media showed the ground caving in as dirt slid into the pit, while water poured from a drainage pipe. By noon local time, officials managed to halt further ground movement, though the site continues to be monitored closely.
