Aricha, Nov 17 (V7N) – The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has once again suspended ferry services on the Aricha-Kazirhat waterway, starting from 6 PM on Saturday, citing navigability problems caused by silt accumulation in the approach channel.

This suspension has left over 300 goods-laden trucks stranded on both sides of the river, causing significant hardship for drivers, workers, and passengers awaiting crossings.

Abu Abdullah Rony, Manager of the Commerce Department at BIWTC's Aricha office, explained that low water depth in the approach channel has made ferry operations hazardous. "The current depth is below six feet, whereas ferries require at least eight feet of navigability to operate safely," he said.

Nasir Mohammad Chowdhury, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of BIWTC's Aricha regional office, stated, "Silt accumulation in the Aricha approach channel has reduced water depth, making it impossible to operate ferries safely. To avoid accidents, services have been suspended."

This marks the third suspension of ferry services on this route this month, exacerbating challenges for commuters and the transport of goods. Stranded truck drivers expressed frustration over recurring disruptions, citing delays in delivery schedules and financial losses.

BIWTC officials are exploring measures to restore navigability, including dredging the channel. However, no timeline for resuming services has been announced.

The suspension highlights the urgent need for sustainable river management and channel maintenance to ensure uninterrupted ferry operations and support the region’s transportation network.
