Dhaka, Dec 04 (V7N) — Financial Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has assured that political developments will not impact Bangladesh's economic and trade relations with India. Speaking after a meeting of the Purchase Committee at the Secretariat on Wednesday, he confirmed that imports will be prioritised from sources offering the best prices.

Discussing rice imports, he said, “The decision was made to procure rice based on price advantages. India, Myanmar, and Thailand were discussed as potential sources, and imports will be sourced where prices are lower.”

On concerns raised about the possibility of India halting exports to Bangladesh, Dr. Salehuddin dismissed such claims, terming them political statements. “Such remarks will have no effect on trade relations. Goods imported from India will arrive properly and on time,” he said.

In preparation for Ramadan, the adviser highlighted that measures are being taken to stabilise product prices. Essentials such as dates, oil, and lentils are being imported, and VAT reductions are being implemented to ensure affordability. “These measures will positively impact market prices during the fasting month,” he added.

While acknowledging that political extortion influences market prices, Dr. Salehuddin noted that syndicate activities can be curbed, but controlling extortion remains challenging.

The meeting emphasised the government’s commitment to maintaining a steady supply of essential commodities, ensuring affordability for citizens despite political or economic challenges.
