Dhaka, Feb 02(V7N) — Ferry services on the Aricha-Kazirhat and Paturia-Daulatdia routes resumed Sunday morning after being suspended for several hours due to dense fog.
According to Nasir Chowdhury, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) in Aricha, ferry operations restarted at 8:30 a.m. on the Aricha-Kazirhat route and at 9:00 a.m. on the Paturia-Daulatdia route. The suspension lasted eight hours and ten and a half hours, respectively.
Authorities prioritized passenger buses and freight trucks, allowing them to cross the Meghna and Jamuna rivers first to ease congestion.
Hundreds of Vehicles Stranded
The disruption, which began Saturday night, led to a backlog of over 600 vehicles at the ferry terminals. The stranded vehicles included:
Freight trucks
Night coaches
Passenger buses
Private cars
Microbuses
Pick-up vans carrying perishable goods
With ferry services back in operation, authorities are working to clear the backlog and restore normal traffic flow across the vital river crossings.
