Dhaka, Mar 04 (V7N) – The National Identity Registration (NID) program is set to be transferred from the Election Commission to a newly formed Civil Registration Commission, following the final approval of the National Identity Registration Act Repeal Ordinance by the Chief Advisor.
According to discussions from the Advisory Council meeting, the Cabinet Division has been instructed to take necessary measures to implement the change. The decision is aimed at ensuring an autonomous structure for the NID process, reducing bureaucratic complications, and simplifying procedures for birth certificates, NIDs, and passports.
To finalize the transition, the Cabinet Division will revise the proposed ordinance in consultation with the:
- Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division
- Ministry of Home Affairs
- Local Government Division
- Election Commission Secretariat
Despite the major structural shift, the Election Commission (EC) claims to have no clear information on the matter. Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed stated:
“The Cabinet Division is discussing how to strengthen or expand the NID structure, but the Election Commission has not been informed of any specific decisions.”
The Cabinet Division is expected to present a finalized draft ordinance in an upcoming Advisory Council meeting before officially establishing the Civil Registration Commission.
