Dhaka, Apr 06 (V7N) – Bangladesh remains unwavering in its efforts to combat human trafficking, stated Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury during the third meeting of the BIMSTEC Sub-Group on Human Trafficking, held at a hotel in Dhaka on Sunday.

In his address, the Home Affairs Adviser emphasized Bangladesh's proactive measures to address the issue, including the development of a national action plan and the establishment of a national referral system, which is hosted on a web platform to efficiently identify victims of trafficking. These efforts aim to connect victims with necessary services and support providers.

“We have also set up a dedicated special tribunal to expedite the trial of human traffickers,” Jahangir Alam Chowdhury noted. “Awareness campaigns have been systematically incorporated into our national strategy to prevent and mitigate human trafficking.”

Additionally, the country has expanded its mutual legal assistance mechanism to enhance cooperation with BIMSTEC and other nations in tackling this grave issue. The Home Affairs Adviser underscored the importance of a collective approach to combat human trafficking, acknowledging that traffickers are increasingly adopting new methods to evade government efforts. They exploit migration routes, economic crises, and technology to facilitate their illegal activities.

In this regard, BIMSTEC has been pivotal in providing a platform for member states to share intelligence and best practices, reinforcing the need for stronger regional collaboration in combating human trafficking.

The meeting brought together representatives from the seven BIMSTEC member states, including relevant officials from their Sub-Group on Human Trafficking, to discuss and strengthen cooperation in addressing the issue at the regional level.
