Seven flyovers part of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Gazipur have been opened to traffic ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Gazipur route. These flyovers include the Airport Flyovers on both sides, Jasimuddin Flyover, U-Turn-1 Gazipura Flyover, U-Turn-2 Open University Flyover, Gazipur Bhogra Flyover, and Gazipu Chowrasta Flyover. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader inaugurated the flyovers virtually. However, the entire 20.5km project is expected to be completed by June this year, after several delays from the initial deadline of December 2016. Minister Obaidul Quader expressed confidence that the project would ease commuting to and from Gazipur once fully operational. The Roads and Highways Department is responsible for constructing a 16 km road with seven flyovers, while the Bangladesh Bridge Authority is building a 4.5 km flyover under the project. The BRT project also includes 113 connecting roads, 25 BRT stations, two bus terminals, 30 underpasses, 41km of high-capacity drains, and 20.5km of footpaths. The project, initially proposed in 2011 and approved by ECNEC in December 2012, aims to improve transportation infrastructure in the region.
