Dhaka, Feb 09 (V7N) – Former Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mollah Nazrul Islam, along with three Superintendent of Police (SP)-rank officers, have been detained in separate operations conducted in Dhaka on Friday and Saturday.
The arrests were confirmed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, who stated that all four individuals are currently in the custody of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB). "There are cases against them, and they are now under investigation," IGP Baharul Alam told Media.
In addition to Mollah Nazrul Islam, the detained officers include:
- SP Asaduzzaman, Commandant of the In-Service Training Center in Nilphamari
- SP Abdul Mannan, attached to the Rangpur Range
- Former Bagerhat SP Abul Hasnat
Police sources indicated that following the July-August coup, all four officers were charged with involvement in activities that undermined national security. Despite these charges, they were later reassigned to various police units. The nature of the specific allegations remains unclear, but authorities have confirmed that formal cases have been lodged against the detainees.
The Detective Branch is currently conducting a thorough investigation, and further details regarding the charges are expected to be disclosed in the coming days.
The arrests are part of a broader effort by law enforcement to address misconduct and restore integrity within the police force, particularly in the wake of recent political unrest. The Police Headquarters has emphasized that these actions reflect a commitment to transparency and accountability.
As investigations continue, it remains to be seen how these detentions will impact the broader landscape of law enforcement and governance in Bangladesh.
