Dhaka, Mar 05 (V7N) – The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has temporarily suspended its drive to remove illegal structures around Gabtoli Cattle Market for seven days, following criticism over the lack of prior notice.

On Wednesday morning, authorities demolished illegal shops and brick sheds adjacent to Gabtoli Cattle Market using excavators and bulldozers. However, shopkeepers protested, claiming they had paid rent to lessees who allegedly allowed them to operate in the area.

After the demolition, DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz stated that the vacated spaces would be rented out legally, ensuring businesses comply with the city's regulations. DNCC Executive Magistrate Md. Shahidul Islam added that business operations in city-owned spaces must be conducted per revenue rules, and the evicted premises will not be reoccupied illegally.

Despite the temporary suspension, DNCC remains firm on reclaiming its land, particularly the 30 acres surrounding Gabtoli Hat and at least 150 acres along the embankment, which remain under unauthorized occupation.

Local traders, however, expressed outrage over being evicted without prior notice, especially after having paid their monthly rents. They demand clarity on rental agreements and fair treatment in future city corporation actions.

The DNCC has given affected traders seven days to formalize their businesses legally before resuming the drive.
