Dhaka, Mar 11 (V7N) – Students from 30 colleges in the capital gathered in Shahbagh on Tuesday, demanding justice for rape victims and the maximum punishment for perpetrators. The protest began at 11:30 AM in front of the National Museum, where students arrived in small processions.

During the demonstration, the protesters chanted various slogans, including "We want justice!", "Execute the rapists!", "The student community has woken up!", and "In my golden Bengal, there is no place for rapists!". Law enforcement authorities maintained a cautious presence around the area to ensure security.

The students initially planned to block Shahbagh as part of their protest. However, considering the public's difficulties during Ramadan, they opted for a peaceful sit-in on an empty street in front of the National Museum instead. They announced that the program would continue until the evening.

As part of their movement, the students placed a six-point demand before the authorities. First, they called for the public execution of rapists, stating that such a punishment would serve as a deterrent and set an example in society.

Secondly, they urged the administration to adopt a strict zero-tolerance policy against rape. If necessary, they suggested forming a separate tribunal dedicated to the trial of rapists.

The third demand focused on ensuring a fast-track trial process. The students emphasized that in cases of rape, the accused must be arrested within 24 hours. Additionally, medical reports and witness statements should be recorded immediately, and based on proper evidence, the rapist should be sentenced to execution within 15 working days. They also stressed the need to increase the number of forensic laboratories to expedite the legal process.

Their fourth demand was the complete prohibition of arbitration in rape cases. They argued that only the state should have the authority to ensure justice in such matters. Furthermore, they called for strict action against any officials who unlawfully release rapists through unethical means, suggesting that such officials should be dismissed from their positions after proper investigation. They also demanded that even if the perpetrator is a minor, they should still face severe punishment, including life imprisonment.

The students also insisted that ongoing rape cases must be resolved quickly. They proposed forming a separate tribunal if necessary and ensuring that all trials are completed within 30 working days. Additionally, they called for the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Home Affairs to be held accountable for any delays in the legal process.

The protest comes amid growing public outrage over the increasing incidents of sexual violence across the country. With the participation of both students and concerned citizens, the demonstration reflects the widespread demand for swift and strict action against rapists.
