Despite safety concerns, battery-operated autorickshaws continue to ply the streets of Dhaka, prompting Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader to call for immediate action.
Quader directed authorities to enforce a ban on these vehicles within Dhaka city limits, similar to the ban already in effect on 22 highways. His directive came during a meeting at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office in Banani.
Previously, both Dhaka city corporation mayors had expressed agreement on prohibiting autorickshaws within the city. During the meeting, concerns were raised about reckless driving by autorickshaw drivers, posing risks to pedestrians, especially those with visual impairments or disabilities. Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam stressed the need for a decisive action to mitigate the risks posed by autorickshaws in Dhaka.
