Khagrachhari Jan 6 ( V7N) - The rise of illegal brick kilns in Khagrachhari is causing serious environmental and health concerns, with toxic black smoke threatening the well-being of local residents and damaging agricultural land. These kilns, many of which are operating without proper authorization, have become a major source of pollution, affecting the health of those living nearby.

Residents near the brick kilns are suffering from a range of respiratory issues, including asthma and other cold-related diseases, due to the constant exposure to harmful black smoke. The unregulated operation of these kilns has turned the area into a health crisis zone, with air quality rapidly deteriorating.

Destruction of Cropland

In addition to the health risks, these brick kilns are also devastating agricultural land. The fertile soil, which was once used for farming, is now being extracted to fuel the brick-making process. As a result, the agricultural land in the region is gradually shrinking, leading to a loss of vital resources for local farmers.

Farmers are also losing their cropland as land grabbers, often with the backing of powerful individuals, continue to cut soil from their fields during the day. This practice has become widespread, with locals too fearful to protest due to the influence of those involved in the illegal activities.

There are currently around fifty unauthorized brick kilns in Khagrachhari. These kilns are not only consuming agricultural land but are also contributing to the deforestation of the area. The rise in coal prices has pushed kiln owners to resort to cutting down fruit and forest trees to fuel their operations.

Violation of Government Laws

The Brick Kiln Establishment Act clearly prohibits the establishment of kilns within one kilometer of agricultural land, residential areas, and educational institutions. Despite this, numerous brick kilns have been set up in direct violation of these regulations. Many of these kilns are built near rivers, and most exceed the legal limit of three acres for land use.

Locals have made repeated attempts to raise awareness of the issue, organizing human chains and protests against the illegal brick kilns. However, their efforts have largely been in vain, as brick kiln owners, often backed by influential figures, continue to operate unchecked.

As the illegal brick kiln industry continues to flourish, more and more agricultural land is being lost, and public health is at increasing risk. With many kilns operating without proper licenses and in violation of environmental laws, the community is left to cope with the consequences of unchecked industrial growth. The authorities must take immediate action to address this growing crisis and protect the environment and public health.
