Dhaka, Feb 16 (V7N) –The High Court has issued a rule questioning why unused mobile internet data, minutes, and SMS should not be carried over to the next purchased package.

Following the initial hearing of a writ petition, the High Court bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi issued the order on Sunday.

Lawyer Md Mizanur Rahman Kayes represented the petitioner in court.

Following the hearing, he said: “Bangladesh has nearly 13.1 million mobile internet users. According to the law, unused mobile data must be added to the next purchased data package. But even if mobile internet data, minutes, and SMS remain unused, they cannot be used later.”

He added: “None of the mobile operators are following BTRC regulations. They are doing whatever they want.”

The lawyer continued: “On January 13, I sent a legal notice to the secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division, the chairman of the BTRC, Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink, and Teletalk, demanding immediate action against such unreasonable decisions.

“As no action was taken, I was personally aggrieved and filed a writ petition at the High Court last month. Today (Sunday), after the hearing, the court has issued a rule.

“The rule asks why purchased but unused mobile internet data, minutes, and SMS should not be added to the next data, minutes, and SMS package. The posts and telecommunications secretary, the chairman of the BTRC, and other relevant parties have been asked to respond within four weeks."
