Pabna, Dec 04 (V7N) – After evading law enforcement for more than 11 years, convicted rapist Manik Mondal has been arrested by police in Gazipur’s Joydebpur area. He had been on the run since being sentenced to life imprisonment in a 2014 rape case in Pabna’s Chatmohar upazila.

Police said the arrest was made late Wednesday night when a team from Chatmohar police station, acting on a confidential tip-off, located Mondal at a garment factory where he had been working under a false identity. The operation was led by Sub-Inspector Awlad Hossain.

Mondal, a resident of Bothor village in Bilchalon Union, was convicted after a local woman filed a rape case against him on September 1, 2014 under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Following a lengthy trial, a Pabna court sentenced him to life imprisonment and fined him Tk 50,000. Immediately after the incident, he fled the area and remained out of reach for over a decade.

According to investigators, Mondal had been living quietly in Gazipur, avoiding contact with his home district and concealing his background to avoid detection. Police sources said he changed workplaces several times over the years, taking low-profile jobs to prevent raising suspicion.

Chatmohar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manjurul Alam confirmed the arrest on Thursday afternoon, stating that Mondal had been deliberately hiding his identity for a long period. He said the successful operation was the result of sustained intelligence efforts.

Mondal was produced before a local court on Thursday morning and has since been sent to jail to begin serving his life sentence.
