Jhalkathi, Jan 05, (V7N) - Nestled along the Bishkhali River in Kathalia, Jhalkathi, Shailer Char is emerging as a stunning tourist destination, drawing visitors with its natural beauty. The recently developed DC Ecopark, situated within the char, features a picturesque lake, resting areas, and children's entertainment facilities, making it a perfect getaway for nature lovers. The char, which is a river island formed from the land that emerged from the river, is named after the native "Shaila" trees, which are salt-tolerant and widely found here.
The area’s unique ecosystem, with its lush greenery including Keoa, Hojol, and various other species of trees, provides a haven for birdlife, particularly species like the Shalik, Dhahuk, and Heron. The charm of the place lies in the peaceful environment, as there are no dangerous animals, making it a safe retreat for families and tourists alike.
Around 10 years ago, a 41-acre landmass emerged in the Bishkhali River, which has since expanded to 61 acres. The natural beauty of Shailer Char has quickly captured the attention of visitors, with local residents now calling for the inclusion of the site under the tourism corporation for further development.
Shailer Char is accessible from the Jhalkathi district town, located about 35 kilometers away. A mere 5 kilometers drive leads to the char, where tourists can enjoy the scenic river views and surrounding nature.
The area's ongoing development includes the creation of DC Ecopark, with its mesmerizing lake, and the construction of air-conditioned rest houses for tourists. Schools and colleges in the region often organize picnics, while families flock to the site for leisure. The char’s growing popularity has also created job opportunities for local residents. However, to fully realize its potential, the collaboration of the tourism corporation is essential.
Local residents, including shopkeepers like Mohammad Hemayet Akon, mention that the area has undergone significant improvements, with benches, swings, toilets, and clean drinking water now available for visitors. The local "Ashar Alo Youth Society" plays a pivotal role in maintaining the site and guiding tourists.
Kathalia's Upazila Executive Officer, Mohammad Jahirul Islam, expressed confidence that Shailer Char will become one of the region's top tourist destinations in the future, thanks to ongoing efforts to enhance its attractions and ensure visitor safety.
