Tangail, Feb 13 (V7N) – Maghi Purnima, a highly revered religious festival for Hindus and Buddhists, was observed with great fervor at Poati Bill in Auliabad village, Kalihati Upazila, Tangail. The occasion, which falls on the full moon day of the Magha month in the Bengali calendar, holds special significance due to the alignment of the celestial bodies – Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn – all residing in the Ashlesha constellation. According to tradition, it is believed that during this time, gods travel to Earth, and their presence brings blessings.
For over a century and a half, the residents of Kalihati and surrounding areas have been gathering at Poati Bill to participate in the sacred Maghi Purnima rituals, which include taking a holy dip in the bill (water body) and performing prayers at the nearby Kali Temple. The event has become an important cultural and religious gathering in the region, attracting thousands of pilgrims each year.
This year, the celebrations began at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, February 12, and continued until 5 p.m. Devotees flocked to the bill, seeking spiritual merit and making offerings. In addition to the traditional bath, the pilgrims threw bananas, coconuts, gold, and silver into the water, believing these gestures would bring prosperity and fulfill their wishes. Money donations were also made at the Poati Bill Kali Temple, with devotees contributing to the temple’s upkeep and to receive blessings.
A vibrant fair, with various stalls selling local goods, was set up at Auliabad market, adding to the festive atmosphere. The market was filled with people of all ages, enjoying the celebrations, socializing, and shopping for various items.
One notable aspect of the Maghi Purnima tradition at Poati Bill is its significance for childless couples. Advocate Azizur Rahman, Chairman of Parthi Union, shared that for nearly 150 years, couples who have struggled with infertility visit the bill on this auspicious day to bathe in the hopes of having children. This long-standing tradition has helped foster a strong sense of community and devotion in the area.
The event was marked by a spirit of unity and faith, with people coming together to honor the divine presence and seek blessings for a prosperous life. The ritual, deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of Kalihati, continues to attract large numbers of devotees, preserving the religious and spiritual traditions of the region.
