RANGPUR, Aug 09 (V7N) – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin announced on Saturday that the next national election is likely to be held in the first half of February 2026. This comes as the Election Commission (EC) intensifies its preparations for the polls across the country.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the Rangpur divisional administration, the CEC stated that the Commission is actively coordinating with election officials at all levels to ensure a smooth election process. He issued a stern warning against any form of disruption, saying that voting in any constituency will be suspended immediately if disorder breaks out at a polling center. He added that any official found guilty of irregularities, corruption, or bribery will be barred from election duties.
The CEC acknowledged that restoring public trust in the electoral process and encouraging voter turnout are major challenges. He noted that voter apathy has become a significant concern, with many people feeling their votes do not make a difference. "Overcoming it is a major challenge for us, and we are actively working to change it," he said. He called on journalists and the media to help in this effort by raising public awareness.
Regarding the election schedule, the CEC said it would be announced two months in advance, though a specific date has not yet been set. He emphasized that the Commission is working to ensure a credible election by collaborating with presiding officers and the administration.
Nasir Uddin also addressed the issue of misinformation and the misuse of artificial intelligence, calling it "more dangerous than weapons." He urged the public not to share content without verifying its authenticity and called for the media's support in combating harmful content.
The CEC reiterated the EC's commitment to remaining neutral and working for the people of Bangladesh. He concluded by saying that the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election will be conducted in a transparent, free, and fair manner to restore public faith in the democratic process.
The CEC is currently on a three-day visit to Rangpur to meet with election-related officials as part of the Commission’s groundwork for the national polls.
