Sirajganj, July 18 (V7N)- "In Sirajganj, clashes erupted between police, Chhatra League, and quota reform protesters, resulting in a fire at the BNP office. Cases have been filed against protesters, and four arrests made.
An incident of intense clashes occurred in Sirajganj focusing on the demand for quota reforms, involving police, Chhatra League, and student activists. During this time, a fire broke out at the BNP office, claimed Saedur Rahman Bachchu, the general editor of the district BNP.
From Wednesday (July 17) afternoon until 11 pm, conflicts occurred repeatedly at IBI Road, Islamic College ground, and BNP office area in the city. According to local sources, student activists from the Chhatra League attempted to unite at the Islamic College ground but were dispersed by the police. In the evening, they staged a protest rally against the deaths of six quota reform student protesters. At that time, they launched an attack on the No. 2 police station. This is when the clashes began. At one point, Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Swechchhasebak League activists were involved in the clashes, leading to exchanges of brickbats. Police responded by firing tear gas shells and rubber bullets. During the clash, a fire was set at the BNP office at 10 pm.
Earlier (July 16), clashes occurred between quota reform activists and police. As a result, 20 people, including police officers, were injured. Consequently, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the No. 2 police station, Sohag, was accused of assault and the names of 17 people were mentioned in an unknown case involving 70 people. In this case, four people have been arrested.
The president of the district Swechchhasebak League, Jakirul Islam Limon, said there is no limit to the demands for quota reform among the students at present. The protests under the names of BNP, Chhatra Dal, and student organizations have initiated violence. They attacked the police station. Later, when we went to resist them, they also attacked us. As a result, at least 25 leaders of Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Swechchhasebak League were injured.
Saedur Rahman Bachchu, the general editor of the district BNP, said they protested the disappearance of six quota reform students. Later, they staged a protest rally. We don't know who caused the subsequent incidents.
Suddenly, around 10 pm last night, we heard that Awami League activists set fire to the BNP office.
Saedur Rahman Bachchu added, 'Since students can participate in the protest, there is no restriction among the students there. Nationalist Chhatra Dal is the name of a student organization. However, there were no BNP activists there. Many Chhatra Dal and ordinary students were injured in the clashes, he said.
Sirajganj Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam said a group of student activists from Chhatra Dal staged a protest rally in the evening. At that time, the student activists attacked the police station number two. From this, information on the clash was released.
Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ariful Islam said, "We are in a strict situation. Extra police deployment to combat the situation in the city and the main road. However, anyone who violates the law will face legal action.
Sirajganj Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam confirmed the incident, saying that in Sirajganj city, a case was filed against the protest rally at the time of quota reform and clashes between students and police.
