Barguna, Sep 11 (V7N) - Shoaib Kabir, the convener of Betagi Upazila Chhatra Dal in Barguna, had been relatively inactive in local politics while the Awami League was in power. However, since the resignation and departure of Sheikh Hasina on August 5th, Shoaib has become increasingly unruly. On August 5th and 6th, he has been accused of vandalizing various properties in Betagi Upazila, attacking the homes of Awami League supporters, and extorting money from individuals and contractors. Following a joint raid by the navy to apprehend him, Shoaib has gone into hiding. The residents of Betagi Upazila now view Shoaib as a significant threat.

It has been reported that Shoaib Kabir lives in the 7th ward of Betagi Municipality. His father, Mohammad Shahjahan Kabir, is a former chairman of Betagi Upazila Parishad and a former mayor of the municipality. Although he was initially involved in politics with the Jatiya Party, he joined the BNP when they came into power. Shahjahan Kabir served as the president of the Betagi Upazila BNP for a long time but was removed from his position several times after the Awami League came to power due to his connections with the ruling party.

According to several BNP leaders from Betagi, who wished to remain anonymous, Shoaib led acts of vandalism in various locations after August 5th. He also extorted money from individuals and businesses, which has tarnished the party's reputation. Last Sunday night, a navy team conducted a raid at Shoaib's home in an attempt to arrest him. Although they did not find Shoaib, they questioned his father, Shahjahan Kabir, and issued a warning before letting him go. If such actions continue, the BNP’s presence in Betagi may be at risk.

Attempts to reach Shoaib Kabir, the Betagi Upazila Chhatra Dal convener, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to multiple phone calls.

Mohammad Shahjahan Kabir, Shoaib’s father and former president of Betagi Upazila BNP, denied the allegations against his son, calling them false and fabricated.
