MYMENSINGH, June 21, (V7N) — Adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Farida Akhter today said the interim government is committed to holding a free, fair, and participatory national election, ensuring a peaceful handover of power to the people's representatives.
She made the remarks while addressing a regional workshop at the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) in Mymensingh.
Farida said, “Reforms to the Election Commission and necessary preparatory measures have already been taken to ensure timely polls.”
Highlighting the role of fisheries in national nutrition, she emphasized:
“Fish is the main source of animal protein in Bangladesh and an integral part of Bengali culture, so research ensuring safe and sustainable fish production is crucial.”
She stressed that research-based technologies must reach grassroots level to ensure sustainability and resource conservation.
The adviser also addressed environmental concerns in fish farming, particularly in the Haor region, announcing that local-level committees are working to control the use of harmful pesticides.
Farida urged the BFRI to intensify efforts in identifying and conserving endangered fish species.
Others speaking at the event included Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam Sarder of BAU, BFRI DG Dr. Anuradha Bhadra, DoF Director Nripendra Nath Biswas, and Dr. Md. Harun or Rashid.
