London, Oct 10 (V7N): Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman emphasized the importance of fair elections to ensure the continuation of democracy in a message commemorating Shaheed Jehad Day.

“We must ensure free and fair elections to sustain the country’s democratic processes,” Rahman said, marking the day in honor of Nazir Uddin Ahmed Jehad, a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal member from Ullapara upazila, Sirajganj, who was killed on October 10, 1990, during the anti-Ershad protests.

Rahman stressed that the establishment of a non-partisan caretaker government during election periods is crucial for conducting fair elections. He further elaborated, “Democracy is not solely about elections; it also involves restoring the people’s freedom and fundamental rights.”

Rahman called for unity, saying, “Inspired by Shaheed Jehad’s spirit, we must work together to restore democracy and protect the country’s independence and sovereignty.” He also warned of ongoing conspiracies by malicious forces both at home and abroad that must be thwarted.

Paying homage to Jehad, the BNP leader expressed deep respect for his sacrifice during the struggle against the Ershad regime, which aimed to re-establish multi-party democracy and protect freedom of speech and the press. Rahman noted that Jehad’s martyrdom symbolizes the unwavering commitment to democracy, saying, “His soul will not rest if we fail to realize his dream.”
