Dhaka, Dec 01 (V7N) — BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has alleged that the Indian government and its media are spreading misinformation to incite communal tensions and influence Bangladesh’s political landscape in favour of the ruling Awami League. Rizvi made these remarks at a press conference held at the party's central office in Nayapaltan on Sunday morning.
Rizvi claimed that Indian media outlets are publishing fabricated stories about minority persecution in Bangladesh to create divisions and manipulate perceptions. "Neighboring countries never want anyone except the Awami League to do politics in Bangladesh," he said, accusing “radical Hindu groups” in India of promoting propaganda against Bangladesh.
He also criticised India’s handling of its own minority communities, stating, "India is the most persecuted minority nation in the world. Muslims and Christians are continuously subjected to violence, oppression, and discrimination. Over 200 churches have been burned, yet these incidents receive no attention." Rizvi suggested that the Indian media focuses instead on Bangladesh to distract from these issues.
Rizvi accused the Awami League government of fostering an environment of communal violence and mismanagement, citing incidents of minority persecution and an increase in assault cases during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. He also alleged that India has legitimised controversial actions by the Awami League, such as the 2009 BDR mutiny, the Shapla Chattar incident, and elections he described as lacking voter participation.
Rizvi criticised the use of judicial power to target BNP leaders, including Tarique Rahman, in the August 21 grenade attack case. He alleged that the government has manipulated state institutions to deliver politically motivated sentences against BNP leaders. However, he praised the recent High Court decision that he claimed restored some justice in the case.
The BNP leader urged citizens to be vigilant against external interference and propaganda aimed at disrupting the political and social fabric of Bangladesh. He reiterated that the BNP is committed to establishing democracy and justice in the country without external influence.
The allegations come at a time of heightened political tension in Bangladesh, as parties prepare for the upcoming national elections amid international scrutiny.
