Noakhali, Feb 06 (V7N)— The residence of Awami League General Secretary and former minister Obaidul Quader in Companiganj Upazila, Noakhali, was attacked, vandalized, and set on fire by a group of students and locals. The incident took place around 12:15 PM on Thursday.
Eyewitnesses reported that a large group stormed the property, breaking the gate and walls before entering the two-story house. The attackers ransacked the premises, throwing furniture and other belongings before setting fire to the building. Several nearby houses, reportedly belonging to Obaidul Quader and his family members, were also damaged in the attack.
Arif, coordinator of the Noakhali Anti-Discrimination Movement, claimed responsibility for the attack, stating, “This will be the fate of those who support tyranny.” He added that the attack reflected public outrage from various sectors of society.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with protesters chanting slogans against Obaidul Quader while smashing doors, windows, and grills. The house belonged to his younger brother, Abdul Quader Mirza, former mayor of Basurhat Municipality and president of Companiganj Upazila Awami League. His other younger brother, Shahadat Hossain, lived in the adjacent house. Reports indicate that both brothers and their families have been in hiding since August 5.
Authorities have yet to comment on the attack or any potential legal action. The situation remains tense in the area as law enforcement monitors developments.
