Dhaka, July 29 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on the government to announce the July Charter and declare the election date as per the decision taken at the recent London meeting, warning that the country’s issues cannot be resolved through externally imposed ideas.

He made the remarks on Tuesday during a National Discussion Meeting held at the National Press Club, marking the death anniversary of late Chhatra Dal leader Shafiul Bari Babu.

Mirza Fakhrul said, “BNP is not afraid of reforms — we welcome them. But problems arise when irrelevant or foreign ideas are imposed. The people of Bangladesh don’t relate to PR (Proportional Representation) systems or electronic voting machines (EVMs). They want a system they understand and trust.”

He added that the people are accustomed to a traditional voting system, and pushing unfamiliar processes only creates further confusion and distrust. “People say, ‘What is this, brother?’ They want their vote to count in a system they know,” he emphasized.

In a message to other political parties, Mirza Fakhrul stated, “Some parties are betting on PR, but I urge them — arrange the elections in a way that reflects the will of the people. Only then can the political crisis be resolved.”

The BNP leader’s remarks reflect the party’s growing frustration over the current electoral framework and its push for a more inclusive and locally grounded solution to the political impasse.
