Dhaka, Sep 07 (V7N) – BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of writer, researcher, intellectual, and leftist politician Badruddin Umar.

In a condolence statement on Sunday, Tarique Rahman said, “The Bangladesh Nationalist Party and I are deeply saddened by the demise of Badruddin Umar, a pioneer of leftist progressive politics, teacher, and intellectual. The passing of this fearless voice has created a sense of disappointment among the people.”

He praised Umar’s lifelong dedication, saying that from the 1952 Language Movement to the struggle for independence and against all forms of dictatorship, Umar’s writings and thoughts remained unforgettable. His research-based books on the political, social, cultural, and economic changes in Bangladesh were described as an invaluable asset for readers and scholars alike.

Tarique Rahman added that no fear or threat ever deterred Umar from expressing his independent opinion, calling him a symbol of free conscience in the country.

The BNP leader also sought forgiveness for the departed soul and expressed his heartfelt condolences to Umar’s family, devotees, and well-wishers.

Badruddin Umar, aged 94, had been suffering from various age-related health complications and passed away on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.
