Ukhiya, Sept 26 (V7N) – Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists in Ukhiya upazila staged a protest rally and street meeting on Friday evening, pressing a five-point demand that included the introduction of a proportional representation (PR) electoral system and the formation of a impartial Election Commission.

The rally began around 5 p.m. at the Ukhiya Station premises and later paraded through the main road before converging into a street meeting. The event was presided over by Ukhiya Upazila Jamaat chief Maulana Abul Fazal, while the chief guest was Cox’s Bazar district Jamaat Ameer and parliamentary candidate for the Ukhiya–Teknaf constituency, Principal Nur Ahmad Anwari.

In his speech, Anwari criticized rival political forces, saying: “One party does not understand proportional representation. Yet they are desperate to return to power. Now they have become neo-fascists.” He added that a fair and transparent electoral system was essential to safeguard democracy and people’s voting rights.

Speakers at the meeting emphasized that proportional representation was necessary to restore democracy, ensure the right to vote, and build a welfare-oriented state. They argued that without such reforms, free and fair elections in Bangladesh would remain elusive.

The program concluded peacefully, with hundreds of Jamaat members, leaders, and supporters in attendance. Other speakers included Ukhiya Upazila Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Maulana Nurul Haque, Palongkhali Union Jamaat chief Abul Ala, Holdiapalong Union Jamaat chief Maulana Abul Bashar, and local leaders Abdul Karim, Nur Mohammad Sikdar, Selim Uddin, and Zahedul Islam.

The demonstration reflected Jamaat’s growing push for electoral reforms, particularly proportional representation, which they argue would prevent political domination by a single party and ensure fairer representation of diverse political voices in the parliament.
