Dhaka, Oct 09 (V7N) – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman paid tribute to Shaheed Nazir Uddin Jihad, calling him an unforgettable figure in the movement against dictator Hussain Muhammad Ershad. He made the remarks in a message on Martyr’s Jihad Day on Thursday.
Tarique Rahman said that the blood-stained movement of the 1990s was a decisive struggle to restore multi-party democracy, freedom of expression, and freedom of the press in the country. He highlighted the bravery of Shaheed Jihad, who was fatally shot in the chest during the mass uprising, saying that the movement’s momentum ultimately led to Ershad’s fall.
Paying homage, the BNP leader said, “I pray for the forgiveness of his soul. This fearless student leader embraced martyrdom with the firm conviction of re-establishing democracy and placing it on a solid foundation. If we cannot realize that dream, his soul will suffer.”
He further emphasized that democracy is more than just elections, highlighting the importance of people’s freedom and fundamental rights. He also called for resisting domestic and foreign conspiracies, safeguarding independence and sovereignty, and continuing the struggle to strengthen democratic governance in Bangladesh.
