Dhaka, Oct 11 (V7N) – BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that the consensus commission will not be able to reach an agreement on all issues with the parties supporting the proportional representation (PR) system, adding that the matter should ultimately be left to the people to decide.
He made the remarks while speaking at a seminar in the capital on Saturday (October 11) afternoon.
Amir Khasru said, “The people did not give the political parties the responsibility to organize a referendum on the PR issue. If anyone says discussions are meaningless just because their demands are not met, that is not democracy.” He added that unresolved matters could still be discussed in parliament.
Emphasizing tolerance in politics, the BNP leader noted, “In Bangladesh’s political culture, we must learn to respect differing opinions. Otherwise, even long discussions will not yield any results.”
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad said that elections under the PR system are essential to remove long-standing flaws in Bangladesh’s electoral process.
