Dhaka, Nov 13 (V7N) — BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed alleged that Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus violated the July Charter in his address to the nation on Thursday.
Salahuddin Ahmed criticized the announcement of the Constitution Reform Council, calling it a “new idea” that was not discussed in the Consensus Commission.
In his speech at noon, Chief Advisor Yunus outlined key provisions of the July Charter Implementation Order, including:
-
Holding a referendum on constitutional reform proposals on the day of the upcoming National Parliament election.
-
Formation of a Constitution Reform Council if the majority votes ‘yes’ in the referendum, with the council members also serving as parliamentarians.
-
The council will amend the constitution within 180 working days from its first session. Subsequently, an upper house will be formed within 30 working days based on the election results, with a term concurrent with the lower house.
While BNP had been advocating for a referendum on the day of the election, eight other parties, including Jamaat, had demanded that the referendum be held prior to the elections.
Salahuddin Ahmed’s remarks reflect growing political debate over the Chief Advisor’s implementation plan and the role of the Constitution Reform Council in the reform process.
