Dhaka, Nov 19 (V7N) — BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party is a free, independent, and democratic political party, not a revolutionary one. He stated that BNP has always fought for democracy, and the people of Bangladesh have similarly fought for democratic rights for centuries.

He made the remarks at the unveiling of the book “BNP in the 20th Mass Uprising” and a documentary exhibition held at a hotel in Gulshan on Wednesday afternoon.

Mirza Fakhrul alleged that while the International Crimes Tribunal is delivering a verdict against Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity, “mobocracy or violence is being created” to divert public attention. He suggested that certain groups may be attempting to undermine the significance of the verdict, urging political parties to examine the issue seriously.

Calling for a return to democratic norms, he said, “If we do not want Bangladesh to become a failed state, we must return to the path of democracy and rebuild democratic institutions.” He appealed for unity among all pro-democracy forces, including BNP.

Addressing the topic of reforms, the BNP Secretary General stated that demanding reforms individually reflects “narrow-mindedness.” He added that BNP has long been advocating for necessary reforms in the country.
