Dhaka, Nov 19 (V7N) — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has demanded that Election Commission (EC) officials be appointed as returning officers and assistant returning officers for the upcoming national elections.

BNP Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moin Khan made the demand during a dialogue between the EC and political parties at the Commission Building in Agargaon on Wednesday.

Dr. Khan emphasized the importance of a strong Election Commission during the country’s transitional period. “The EC must be in a strong position, and the maximum use of available manpower must be ensured. If Commission officials are appointed as returning officers, it will bring a qualitative change in politics,” he said.

He also stressed that political party candidates must adhere to the rules and regulations, including the code of conduct. “No matter how much commitment is taken, if we do not correct ourselves, it will not be of any use. The provision for punishment in the commitment is not clear,” he added.

Dr. Khan further noted that several suggestions previously submitted by BNP had not been reflected, calling for greater consideration of party input.
