Dhaka, Dec 22 (V7N)- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on all democratic forces to unite against what he described as “evil forces,” saying that the time has come not only to remain alert but also to stand up.

He made the remarks at a joint press conference organized by the Editors’ Council and NOAB at a hotel in the capital on Monday (December 22) morning.

Mirza Fakhrul said the country is currently passing through a critical and difficult situation. Referring to recent attacks, he stated that assaults on the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star were not merely attacks on media institutions, but direct attacks on democracy and the July coup.

Speaking at the same event, The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam alleged that the attackers did not come merely to vandalize property, but with the intention to kill. He said the buildings were set on fire as part of a larger plan. According to him, the situation has reached a point where survival itself has become more important than freedom of expression.

Meanwhile, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman claimed that elements within the state power structure are backing mob terrorism. He said ordinary citizens are now increasingly concerned about their personal safety amid the deteriorating law and order situation.

The speakers jointly emphasized the need for collective resistance, accountability, and protection of democratic institutions, particularly at a time when the country is heading toward national elections.
