Dhaka, Jan 01 (V7N) – The graves of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and her husband, late martyred President Ziaur Rahman, have been opened to the public at Zia Udyan in the capital.
The graves were opened around noon on Thursday (January 1). Since then, a steady stream of BNP leaders, activists and supporters, along with people from all walks of life, have been visiting the site to pay their respects.
With the sunrise of the English New Year, the number of visitors at the grave complex began to increase significantly. Quran recitation and special prayers are being held throughout the day. After visiting the graves, many visitors were seen offering prayers for the forgiveness of the departed souls, while others expressed deep emotion and grief.
Various professional and social organizations have also paid tribute by laying wreaths. The entire grave complex has become covered in flowers, reflecting the deep respect and affection of the people for the late leader.
Begum Khaleda Zia was laid to rest with full state honours at around 5:00 pm on Wednesday (December 31) beside the grave of her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman. Prior to the burial, her namaz-e-janaza was held at around 3:00 pm at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban grounds and Manik Mia Avenue, attended by lakhs of mourners.
During the burial, her son and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman, daughter Zaima Rahman, the wife of her late younger son Arafat Rahman, Shamila Rahman, his daughters Zahia Rahman and Zafira Rahman, along with other family members, BNP leaders, activists and leaders of various political parties, were present and paid their final respects.
It may be recalled that Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at 6:00 am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital. She was 80 years old and had long been suffering from multiple health complications, including heart, lung, liver and kidney diseases, as well as diabetes.
