Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader stated that the proposed 15% tax on black money in the 2024-25 fiscal year budget is intended to curb money laundering. He emphasized that this measure will bring undisclosed income into the mainstream economy, enhancing the flow of money into the banking system.

Despite criticism from the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) about the ethical implications of legalizing black money, Quader defended the move as necessary to protect the country's financial integrity.

The CPD argued that the provision contradicts the Awami League’s election manifesto and promotes corruption. They criticized the budget for failing to address inflation and economic challenges, although they acknowledged the increased allocations for health and education in the Annual Development Programs (ADPs).
