Dhaka, Sep 04 (V7N) - Awami League Supports Joint Operation for Weapons Recovery, Emphasizes Protection of Innocents

The Awami League has expressed support for the newly launched joint operation aimed at recovering weapons and ammunition. In a statement released on their official Facebook page, the party acknowledged the critical need for such an operation to address the escalating criminal activities across the country.

“We endorse the joint operation to retrieve weapons and ammunition, recognizing its importance in safeguarding public interest amidst growing criminal threats,” the statement read. However, the Awami League also stressed the importance of ensuring that innocent individuals are not subjected to undue harassment during the course of this operation.

The Awami League, which lost power following a student-led uprising on August 5, pointed out that individuals involved in the recent spate of robberies at police stations—implicated in various news reports and video footage—must be apprehended through lawful means. The party underscored that these individuals, who are linked to certain political factions, should be dealt with according to the legal process.

The party cautioned that if members of these political factions were to act as informants for the joint forces, it could undermine the operation’s credibility. The Awami League raised concerns that such involvement might lead to biased targeting of political opponents, thereby questioning the operation’s true objectives.

The Awami League reiterated its stance on the need for a stringent crackdown on illegal firearms and narcotics. “We urge the authorities to ensure that no innocent individuals are detained and to strive for a drug and weapon-free Bangladesh,” the statement concluded.

The government has initiated a joint operation starting September 4 to recover firearms and ammunition that were either not returned to police stations under suspended licenses or recently stolen from police facilities.
