Dhaka, Oct 16 (V7N)- Nahid Islam, the Information Adviser to the interim government, announced the cancellation of several commemorative days that are primarily associated with Awami League party events. He made the announcement during a briefing held at the secretariat on Wednesday (October 16).
In his statement, Nahid Islam clarified that only days that are not of national importance have been removed from the calendar. He mentioned that there is ongoing discussion about adding August 5 as a new day in recognition of the spirit of the revolution, acknowledging the contributions made by various individuals beyond just the recognized figures from Awami League.
"Not only the Father of the Nation, but many others played significant roles in the great war of liberation. Awami League, for instance, has historically underplayed the contributions of figures like Maulana Bhasani," said Nahid Islam. He also remarked that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s legacy has been overshadowed by Awami League’s own actions, and while the March 7 speech is historically important, it does not warrant being declared a national day. He added that a growing number of citizens do not recognize Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the Father of the Nation.
Earlier in the day, a verified post from the official Facebook page of the Chief Adviser of the interim government listed eight commemorative days that have been canceled. These include five days related to the birth and death anniversaries of members of Sheikh Hasina's family:
1. March 17 – Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's birthday and National Children's Day
2. August 5 – Birth anniversary of Sheikh Hasina's brother, Captain Sheikh Kamal
3. August 8 – Birth anniversary of Sheikh Hasina's mother, Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib
4. August 15 – Bangabandhu's death anniversary and National Day of Mourning
5. October 18 – Sheikh Hasina's younger brother Sheikh Russell Day
Additionally, three other days that have been removed from the calendar are:
6. March 7 – Historic March 7 speech day
7. November 4 – National Constitution Day
8. December 12 – Smart Bangladesh Day
These cancellations reflect the interim government's stance on streamlining national commemorations, focusing only on those of broader national significance.
