Dhaka, Dec 04 (V7N) — Among more than 2,200 prisoners who escaped during the anti-discrimination student movement, 700 convicts remain at large, including 73 individuals sentenced to death, according to Brigadier General Syed Mohammad Motaher Hossain, Inspector General of Prisons.

During a press conference held on Wednesday in the Prisons Department’s conference room, he provided an update on the situation, stating that law enforcement agencies are actively working to apprehend the fugitives.

"So far, 1,500 escaped prisoners have been arrested, and 174 have been released," he said. The remaining escaped prisoners are still absconding, posing a significant challenge to law enforcement.

In addressing the state of the country's prison infrastructure, the Inspector General noted that 17 of the 69 prisons across the country are classified as "dangerous" due to structural risks. The government has initiated efforts to reform and renovate these facilities.

Brigadier General Hossain also dismissed allegations regarding the misuse of mobile phones and reports of luxury living conditions in prisons, claiming such complaints were baseless.

Authorities continue their efforts to maintain law and order while working towards the safe apprehension of the escaped convicts.
