Dhaka, Dec 28 (V7N) — Brigadier General (retd) Sakhawat Hossain, Advisor on Shipping and Labor and Employment, emphasized the need for a bicameral parliament in Bangladesh as a means to establish clear electoral guidelines. Speaking at a national dialogue organized at the Krishibid Institute in the capital on Saturday, Hossain argued that such a structure could eliminate the need for a separate caretaker government.

Hossain stressed that reforms are crucial and that if they are not implemented now, they may never happen again. Reflecting on previous attempts, including reforms in 2007, he pointed out that some changes were made but were not sustained due to political challenges, particularly from the ruling party. He cautioned that failing to implement necessary reforms could lead to further injustice for the victims of past uprisings.

Additionally, Hossain highlighted concerns about the increasing influence of money in the electoral process, citing extortion as a growing issue. He noted that although one party may be expelling members, this is not enough to address the deeper issues at hand. Hossain also called for the introduction of laws to regulate political parties in the country, emphasizing the need for political understanding to address these challenges.
