Dhaka, Jan 01 (V7N) — Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Md. Tajul Islam has announced that 2025 will be dedicated to the trial of crimes against humanity, including those allegedly committed by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League government during the past 16 years.

Speaking to the media after exchanging New Year greetings on Wednesday, Md. Tajul Islam stated, "This year will see the continuation of trials for all heinous crimes, including killings, disappearances, and murders." He emphasized that the prosecution and investigation teams are working diligently to ensure the trials are completed within the year.

While he refrained from specifying an exact date for Sheikh Hasina's trial, the Chief Prosecutor confirmed that the groundwork is in progress. "A specific date or time cannot be given. However, the work will be completed this year," he added.

Regarding the tribunal's operational setup, he noted that the main building, which was under renovation, is now ready. Trial activities are expected to commence there soon, pending approval from the Chief Justice.

On the issue of bringing Sheikh Hasina back from India to face trial, Tajul Islam clarified that it is a matter of state decision-making, but the tribunal is committed to moving forward with the legal processes.

In related developments, the tribunal has issued an arrest warrant against police constable Sujan for his alleged involvement in the murder of five people in Chankharpul on August 5. Sujan has been directed to appear before the tribunal on January 12.

This year’s trials mark a significant moment in Bangladesh’s pursuit of justice for alleged crimes against humanity, with a renewed focus on accountability for past atrocities.
