Dhaka, Jan 11 (V7N)— Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain has expressed concern over the actions of Bangladeshi expatriates during visits by government leaders abroad, stating that such behaviours are harming the country's global image. He made these remarks at a program titled "Branding Bangladesh" held at a hotel in the capital on Saturday.
The advisor pointed out that large gatherings, processions, and slogans at foreign airports to welcome Bangladeshi leaders are practices unique to Bangladesh and are detrimental to its international reputation. “When the Prime Minister of India visits another country, no one is there to chant slogans or hold processions. This behaviour must change if we want to improve Bangladesh's branding,” he said.
Md. Touhid Hossain also highlighted the political divisions among the Bangladeshi diaspora, urging unity to project a positive image of the country. Citing an example from South Africa, he noted that political factions came together to host a joint reception for a guest from Bangladesh, which is rare in other regions. He encouraged such collaborative efforts to strengthen the nation’s global image.
The advisor also raised concerns about anti-Bangladesh propaganda by Indian media, which he claimed portrays Bangladesh as being in a state of constant political turmoil. He called on expatriates to counter this narrative and actively work to promote Bangladesh positively.
Acknowledging grievances about the lack of support from Bangladeshi embassies abroad, he admitted, “Many of the complaints are valid, though not all. We must work to address these issues to support our expatriates better.”
The advisor announced his upcoming visit to China from January 20 to 24 at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. During the visit, he will deliver speeches at the China Institute of International Studies in Beijing and the Shanghai Institute of International Studies in Shanghai. He is also scheduled to meet with business representatives in Shanghai to attract Chinese investment to Bangladesh.
This visit aims to enhance economic cooperation and shape the future framework of bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China.
The advisor also mentioned that the government is preparing a roadmap for a peaceful transfer of power to an elected government, ensuring stability and confidence both domestically and internationally.
