Dhaka, Jan 20 (V7N) — The newly appointed US Charge d'Affaires to Bangladesh, Tracy Anne Jacobson, has reaffirmed her country’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh's interim government on various issues, including development and counter-terrorism.

Jacobson conveyed this assurance during a meeting with Principal Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Monday. She stated, "We are ready to cooperate with your government on various issues," reflecting the United States' ongoing partnership with Bangladesh.

Dr. Yunus provided an update on the government's ongoing reform initiatives, efforts to build political unity through the proposed July Declaration, and plans for the next general election. He expressed optimism that political parties would reach a consensus on the declaration by early February. Highlighting the importance of unity, he described the government’s role as a facilitator, stating that if parties agree to the reform proposals, they will be invited to sign a "July Charter."

The Chief Advisor also sought U.S. cooperation in repatriating Rohingya refugees to safe areas in Rakhine, Myanmar, and urged the United States to increase its imports of Bangladeshi garments and textiles, a vital sector for the nation’s economy.

Jacobson expressed concerns over the arrest of journalists and reports of violence against religious minorities. In response, Dr. Yunus reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining peace for all citizens.

The hour-long meeting also covered Bangladesh's relations with its neighbors, progress on the Rohingya crisis, and the security situation in Myanmar. Both sides emphasized the importance of stability and collaboration in addressing regional challenges.

The meeting highlights the strengthening ties between Bangladesh and the United States as both nations work towards shared goals of development, security, and regional stability.
