Davos, Jan 23 (V7N) — Bangladesh is seeking to establish an economic platform in collaboration with India, Nepal, and Bhutan to capitalise on Nepal's abundant hydropower resources, said Principal Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus during a meeting with German Federal Minister Wolfgang Schmidt at the World Economic Forum.
Highlighting Nepal's readiness to sell hydropower, Professor Yunus noted that Bangladesh could serve as a lucrative market for this renewable energy. "This initiative can create significant employment opportunities while reducing dependence on fossil fuels," he remarked.
The proposal aligns with Bangladesh's efforts to promote regional cooperation in clean energy, which could potentially transform the region's energy landscape. Professor Yunus emphasized the importance of fostering economic ties among the participating countries to unlock Nepal's hydropower potential for mutual benefit.
In addition to discussing regional energy cooperation, Professor Yunus addressed the government's measures to recover stolen assets. He shared that an asset recovery committee and a task force, led by the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, have been formed to trace and reclaim illicit funds.
The government has prioritised the recovery of money from the top 20 money launderers as part of its initial efforts, Yunus informed. This move reflects Bangladesh's commitment to enhancing financial transparency and accountability.
Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor, Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar, briefed reporters about the outcomes of the meeting.
The discussions underscore Bangladesh's proactive approach in fostering regional collaboration and tackling critical economic challenges at the global stage.
