Dhaka, Feb 12 (V7N) – Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the interim government, visited the Aynaghor facility on Wednesday, accompanied by representatives from local and foreign media. The visit aimed to inspect the facility, previously used as a Joint Interrogation Cell, where detainees were reportedly held during investigations into enforced disappearances.
Faiz Ahmed, Senior Assistant Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor, confirmed the visit to the media. The inspection followed a decision made at the Advisory Council meeting held on Thursday, February 6. The council had resolved that the Chief Advisor would personally oversee the conditions and operations at Aynaghor.
On January 19, the Commission of Inquiry into the Disappearances briefed the Chief Advisor on the progress of their investigations. The commission highlighted that many of the disappeared individuals had been detained in Aynaghor, raising serious concerns over human rights violations and state accountability.
Following this briefing, the Chief Advisor accepted the commission members' invitation to inspect the facility to gain firsthand insight into its use and conditions.
The visit underscores the interim government's commitment to transparency and justice in addressing the issue of enforced disappearances. It also reflects growing international interest in Bangladesh's human rights situation, as evidenced by the presence of foreign media during the inspection.
Further details regarding the Chief Advisor’s findings and subsequent actions are expected to be released in the coming days.
