Dhaka, Mar 22 (V7N)- Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has assured that the government will take swift action to implement the feasible recommendations from the Media Reforms Commission. He made this statement while receiving the commission’s report at the State Guest House Jamuna on Saturday (March 22).
Dr. Yunus emphasized the need for immediate action on certain reform proposals. "We want to implement the reform proposals that are possible to execute now, as quickly as possible. The commission should outline which recommendations require urgent attention and how they can be implemented efficiently," he said. He also suggested making the report widely accessible, including for journalism students and media professionals.
During the meeting, commission members informed the Chief Adviser that Bangladeshi television channels are not accessible from abroad due to restrictions on satellite usage. In response, Dr. Yunus assured that the government would take necessary steps to ensure that Bangladeshis living overseas, as well as foreign audiences, can access the country’s television broadcasts.
The report was handed over by Media Reform Commission Chairman Kamal Ahmed, alongside other members. The commission includes: Professor Gitiara Nasreen (Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Dhaka University), Fahim Ahmed (CEO of Jamuna Television and Trustee of the Broadcast Journalist Center), Shamsul Haque Zahid (Editor of The Financial Express and representative of the Editors' Council), Anjan Chowdhury (Managing Director of Maasranga Television), Akhtar Hossain Khan (Secretary of the Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh - NOAB), Syed Abdal Ahmed (Former General Secretary of the National Press Club), journalist Jimmy Amir (Convener of the Media Support Network), Mostafa Sabuj (Bogra district correspondent of The Daily Star), Titu Dutta Gupta (Deputy Editor of Business Standard), and Abdullah Al Mamun (Student Representative).
The government formed the Media Reforms Commission last November to propose changes for a more independent, transparent, and professional media landscape in Bangladesh. The recommendations aim to address ownership structures, financial security for journalists, and regulatory improvements.
