Dhaka, Apr 02 (V7N) - The draft of the Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance, 2025 marks a significant step toward ensuring judicial independence in Bangladesh by delegating administrative control of the Supreme Court Secretariat to the Chief Justice.

Under this ordinance, the Supreme Court Secretariat will be led by a Secretary, who will hold the status and privileges equivalent to a Senior Secretary in the government. The Secretariat will be responsible for providing administrative and secretarial support to the Supreme Court and High Court Division, overseeing subordinate courts, and ensuring smooth judicial administration.

The proposed Secretariat will handle critical matters such as appointments, transfers, budget management, security, and training for judges and court staff. It will also be empowered to communicate directly with government ministries and offices, reinforcing judicial autonomy as mandated by Article 22 of the Constitution, which upholds the separation of the judiciary from the executive.

With the Chief Justice having final authority over budgetary expenditures, this ordinance aims to strengthen judicial governance, streamline court administration, and uphold the Supreme Court’s constitutional oversight of the subordinate judiciary.
