Tangail, Mar 27 (V7N) – Authorities at Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) have issued a warning about a fake WhatsApp account impersonating Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand, which is being used to solicit money from individuals.
"A fraud attempt has been made through a fake WhatsApp account using the photo of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University's (MBSTU) vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand," an MBSTU spokesperson confirmed.
The fraudulent account, using the Vice-Chancellor's photo and name, has been used to demand money from various people, raising serious concerns.
"It has been alleged that an unknown person is using the mentioned account to demand money from various people using his photo and name," a university security official stated.
Professor Akhand was alerted to the situation by his colleagues on Wednesday night. He has categorically denied any involvement and warned the public about the scam.
"He said that someone has opened a WhatsApp account using his photo and is asking for money from various people. He stressed, 'I have no connection with this incident. This is completely fraudulent. I request everyone not to fall into the trap of such communication and get cheated,'" Professor Akhand clarified.
The Vice-Chancellor also noted that similar fraudulent activities have targeted vice-chancellors at other universities in the country.
"Dr. Anwarul Azim Akhand also said that such fraud attempts have been made not only with the vice-chancellors of MBSTU but also with the vice-chancellors of several other universities in the country," a university investigation revealed.
MBSTU authorities plan to file a general diary (GD) with the police to initiate a formal investigation.
"We will file a general diary (GD) in this regard at the police station today," Professor Akhand added.
The university has issued a specific warning to all stakeholders to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to the scam.
"MBSTU authorities have specifically urged all concerned to be vigilant," a university advisory stated.
