Dhaka, Apr 30 (V7N)- Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus described the 2024 floods as "unprecedented" and significantly more destructive than in previous years. Speaking at a virtual key handover ceremony for flood victims under the special housing project, Dr. Yunus reflected on the challenges and responses faced by the interim government since assuming office.
"The floods began just as we took over the government. At first, we couldn’t gauge the scale or impact—it was unlike the floods we’ve seen in other years," he said. "As time went on, it became clear how devastating it was."
Dr. Yunus emphasized that many flood victims had lost everything, including their homes, and were left without shelter. He explained his initial reluctance to distribute direct cash aid, fearing mismanagement. Instead, he backed the Ashrayan housing initiative, especially after learning it would be implemented under the supervision of the Bangladesh Army. “I felt assured that the funds would be properly used,” he said.
Praising the execution of the project, he noted, “The houses were not only built properly, but the work was done at half the expected cost. That is rare in our country.”
The event saw the virtual handover of house keys to beneficiaries from Chittagong, Feni, Noakhali, and Comilla, with selected recipients sharing their experiences and expressing deep gratitude to the Chief Advisor.
