New York, Sep 24 (V7N) – World Bank President Ajay Banga held a meeting with Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.

Discussions centered on the upcoming national elections in February, Bangladesh’s democratic transition, revenue and banking sector reforms, and the revival of Chittagong Port. They also addressed efforts to recover laundered money from abroad.

Banga praised Dr. Yunus’s leadership during what he described as “the most critical time in Bangladesh’s history,” noting that strong reforms in banking and revenue sectors are essential for sustainable, high-growth development.

Dr. Yunus, in turn, stressed the need for the World Bank’s support to recover stolen funds and to modernize Chittagong Port, which he described as a catalyst for regional economic growth and job creation. He emphasized that the port could significantly benefit not only Bangladesh but also India’s northeastern states, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Energy Advisor Fauzul Kabir Khan, Special Envoy Lutfe Siddiqui, and SDG Coordinator Lamia Morshed were present during the meeting.
