New York, Sep 25 (V7N) – Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has said that last year’s student-public movement in Bangladesh was not well received by India, which has led to rising tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi. He added that ‘fake’ reports in the Indian media have further fueled the discord.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Asia Society and Policy Institute on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Dr. Yunus alleged that a large volume of misinformation about Bangladesh had been circulated in India.
“Much of the news was fake. The student-public movement was portrayed as an Islamic movement. On top of that, India gave shelter to Sheikh Hasina, which created additional complications. These issues have contributed to the current tensions,” he said.
On regional cooperation, the Chief Advisor stressed the importance of reviving SAARC, saying Bangladesh is prepared to play the role of a bridge for regional trade and maritime connectivity. However, he pointed out that political resistance from New Delhi continues to hinder progress.
Turning to domestic politics, Dr. Yunus said that extensive preparations are underway to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful national election in the first half of February. “After 15 years, 126 million voters will exercise their right to vote through the democratic process,” he added.
