Dhaka, Oct 10 (V7N) – Principal Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus has said that the upcoming national elections, scheduled for the first half of February next year, will be the country’s first truly democratic vote in many years.

He made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with UK Trade Envoy Rosie Winterton at the State Guest House Jamuna on Thursday (October 9).

During the meeting, both sides discussed a wide range of issues, including trade and investment, bilateral cooperation, airport management, clean energy, Bangladesh’s democratic transition, and Professor Yunus’s participation in the recent UN General Assembly session in New York.

Reaffirming his commitment to holding a free, fair, and credible election, Professor Yunus said, “The national elections will take place in the first half of February next year. This election will go down in history as the first truly democratic election in many years.”

Referring to previous polls held during the Awami League’s tenure, the Principal Advisor said that those elections were “a mockery of democracy.” He added that he intends to return to his previous work once the electoral process is completed.

Highlighting his administration’s efforts to combat disinformation, Professor Yunus emphasized the importance of international cooperation in tackling global challenges. He also noted that the UK’s support would be vital in this regard.

UK Trade Envoy Rosie Winterton praised Bangladesh’s recent trade, customs, and revenue reforms, expressing optimism about expanding collaboration in education, aviation, and clean energy sectors. She also commended Professor Yunus’s leadership at the UN General Assembly, particularly for involving leaders of all major political parties in discussions.

The meeting also covered Bangladesh’s proposal to purchase the UK research and survey vessel HMS Enterprise and its plans to acquire coastal patrol ships from the country.

The session was attended by Lutfe Siddiqui, Special Envoy of the Principal Advisor on International Affairs, and Sarah Cook, UK High Commissioner to Bangladesh, among others.
